Data Sources & Methodology

EIA Electric Power Monthly, Table 5.6.B, State-level residential rates, February 2026 release. 2024 values are final; 2025 values are preliminary. National averages sourced from EIA Electric Power Annual: 2022 = 15.04¢, 2023 = 15.98¢, 2024 = 16.48¢ (estimated), 2025 = 17.3¢ (preliminary).
Long-term annual rate increase: 2.6%/year, based on EIA historical residential electricity price data 2010–2024. This is used for 10-year projections. Recent years (2021–2023) saw unusually high increases due to fuel costs and grid investment; 2.6%/yr reflects the longer-term trend.
State rate cases sourced from public utility-commission dockets, with docket numbers where available. Major cases (AZ, CA, ID, NM, UT, VA, TX) re-verified May 2026; other entries reflect 2024–2025 filings and many have since been decided. A listed case does not mean an increase took effect as filed, PUC decisions typically take 9–18 months. Verify current status with your utility or state commission.
Projected 2026 rates use linear extrapolation from each state's 2022–2025 trend, floored at 2%/year. These are estimates, not forecasts.

Why this matters for solar: Every rate increase improves the economics of owning your energy production. States with the steepest recent increases and active pending cases represent the strongest near-term argument for locking in your energy cost with solar.
